Mexico's Law to Regulate Financial Technology Institutions, in force since March 2018. It created two licensed figures: ITF (crowdfunding institutions) and IFPE (electronic payment funds). Before the law, platforms like Cumplo or Kubo operated in a grey zone; now they need authorisation from CNBV (Mexico's banking and securities regulator).
The Law to Regulate Financial Technology Institutions, in force since March 2018, created two figures: IFPE (electronic payment funds — wallets and e-money) and IFC (crowdfunding). It set capital rules, anti-money-laundering standards and data protection for Mexico's fintech ecosystem.
Why it matters to you: a fintech licensed under this law is supervised by CNBV and your money has a protection framework. Many lending apps, though, are neither IFPE nor IFC — they operate as unregulated SOFOM (E.N.R.), outside this umbrella. Before putting in money or data, check which figure it operates under; not every «fintech» plays by the same rules.
